Crucial Success Skills Forged Through My Journey

As the first transwoman from India to become an HR professional within a multinational corporation (MNC), several key skills have been crucial to my success. Through my journey, I've cultivated and honed these skills, each playing a significant role in my accomplishments:

Resilience: In the face of adversity and societal challenges, resilience has been paramount. It has enabled me to navigate obstacles, discrimination, and bias with determination and grace, ensuring that setbacks do not derail my progress.

Leadership: Leadership skills have been instrumental in driving meaningful change and championing diversity within the workplace. By leading by example and empowering others to embrace inclusivity, I have been able to inspire and motivate teams to work towards common goals, fostering a culture of acceptance and respect.

Empathy: Empathy has allowed me to understand and connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds. It has been instrumental in fostering an inclusive work environment where all employees feel valued and supported, regardless of their gender identity or expression.

Communication: Clear and persuasive communication has helped me convey the importance of diversity to stakeholders at all levels, driving buy-in and support for organizational change.

Adaptability: The ability to adapt to evolving circumstances and embrace change has been crucial in navigating the dynamic landscape of both the corporate world and societal attitudes towards gender diversity. Being adaptable has enabled me to stay agile and responsive, effectively addressing emerging challenges and opportunities.

Continuous Learning: Embracing a mindset of continuous learning has been instrumental in my professional growth and development. Remaining open to new ideas, perspectives, and experiences has allowed me to stay ahead of the curve, continuously improving and refining my skills to meet the evolving needs of the organization and its employees.

These key skills have not only contributed to my individual success but have also helped create a more inclusive and equitable workplace where individuals of all backgrounds can thrive and succeed. By leveraging these skills, I have been able to overcome barriers, break down stereotypes, and pave the way for greater acceptance and representation of transgender individuals in corporate settings.

Crafting Creative Opportunities from Every Challenge

I am the first transwoman HR employee in an MNC within India, and I approach adversity with resilience and determination. Here are some key insights from my approach to overcoming challenges:

Maintaining a Positive Outlook: I believe in maintaining a positive outlook even in the face of adversity. Instead of dwelling on setbacks, I focus on finding solutions and opportunities for growth. I prioritize staying professionally set, educated, and equally give importance to my personal standards. I keep professional contacts and an excellent network within the community to create an outlook that helps people understand and follow.

Seeking Support: I understand the importance of seeking support from friends, family, and colleagues during difficult times. I actively reach out for help and surround myself with a strong support network that provides encouragement and guidance. I stay in touch with my college tutors, schoolteachers, and friends who give me a lot of courage to move ahead and achieve in life. While seeking support, I never seek to change myself; I follow the advice and look into them from my perspective.

Learning from Setbacks: Rather than viewing setbacks as failures, I see them as opportunities for learning and personal growth. I reflect on my experiences, identify areas for improvement, and use setbacks as motivation to strive for greater success. Failure was a constant term for me, and I always decided to fight back and move ahead. Stigma and discrimination were everywhere for me, and I was never ready to step back from them. I decided to show the world my real potential, and I wanted to stand out everywhere possible.

Staying Resilient: I believe in the power of resilience to overcome challenges. I remain steadfast in my determination to achieve my goals, even when faced with adversity or discrimination. I applied for jobs after college in Technopark, and many organizations rejected me due to my feminine nature, and nobody accepted the fact that I am talented and educated. While I decided not to cope up with what I am not comfortable with, I explored options to reveal my identity, and I accepted myself first. That was the changemaker decision, and then I never failed anywhere.

Advocating for Change: I am a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion in society. I always use my experiences overcoming challenges as a platform to raise awareness and drive positive change within organizations and the broader community. Due to a lack of opportunities, I never got chances to work with the community initially. However, when I came out from the gender stereotypes and made a change in society, many organizations and institutions approached me for embracing diversity and setting up for them. I was very happy and honored to do that since our community needs inclusion and a great place that is equal for everyone.

Celebrating Progress: I indeed celebrate my achievements, no matter how small, as I recognize the importance of acknowledging progress and staying motivated on my life journey. I have struggled a lot to get recognized while seeing many people were moving successfully in life. Only due to my gender, I was not ready to set back and get failed everywhere. Today every achievement I made is only because of my identity and the fight I did to achieve it.

Overall, my approach to adversity is characterized by resilience, optimism, and a commitment to driving positive change. I recognize the value of learning from challenges and using them as opportunities for personal and professional growth.

My Impact

I, Zara Sheikha, as the first transwoman HR employee in an MNC within India, have made significant strides in promoting diversity and inclusion in society. Through my advocacy and leadership, I have positively influenced both my workplaces and the broader community in several ways:

Creating a More Inclusive Work Environment: My presence and active involvement in HR initiatives have helped create a more inclusive work environment where individuals of all gender identities feel accepted and valued. My efforts have led to the implementation of policies and practices that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, benefiting employees at all levels of the organization. Drawing from my personal experience, I have led many organizations to implement concrete Diversity and Inclusion policies, ensuring they are not just written on paper but are effectively implemented and accessible to everyone. I have worked with multiple organizations across India and outside the country, identifying opportunities to bring diversity and successfully implementing them. Viewing society as a place where we all belong, I advocate for inclusivity and harmony alongside diversity.

Breaking Down Stereotypes and Biases: By openly embracing my identity as a transwoman and excelling in my role, I have challenged stereotypes and biases within society at large. My visibility and success serve as a powerful example of the capabilities and contributions of transgender individuals in professional settings, helping to break down barriers and foster greater acceptance and understanding. Recognizing that education is essential and often denied to transgender people everywhere, I have fought to ensure education is accessible for the community. I have successfully collaborated with NGOs to spread awareness and create more inclusive spaces.

Supporting and Empowering Others: I actively mentor and support other transgender individuals aspiring to pursue careers in corporate environments. Through my guidance and encouragement, I empower them to overcome obstacles and achieve their professional goals, ultimately contributing to greater representation and diversity in the workforce. Addressing the challenge of effectively hiring and training LGBTQ+ candidates, I advocate for sensitization initiatives and recommend organizations to prioritize them.

Inspiring Future Generations: I hope that my visibility and achievements inspire not only my colleagues but also future generations of transgender individuals to pursue their aspirations with confidence and resilience. By witnessing someone like me succeed in a traditionally male-dominated field, young transgender individuals are encouraged to pursue their dreams without fear of discrimination or prejudice. I emphasize the importance of identifying one's passion and maintaining self-confidence, encouraging individuals to fight against stigma and challenges while embracing their true selves. Gender dysphoria is a complex issue, and I advocate for exploring various socio-mental and psychological elements before considering an identity change. I urge future generations not to follow others but to pursue their passions with determination.

Overall, my work has tangible and far-reaching impacts on both my previous workplaces and society as a whole, fostering greater inclusivity, understanding, and acceptance of transgender individuals in the workplace and beyond.

Supporting Others: Another benchmark of success for me is the ability to support and empower other transgender individuals in their personal and professional journeys. I measure my success by the number of individuals I have mentored, the positive feedback received from those I have assisted, and the tangible progress they make in achieving their goals. Community Engagement: My success extends beyond my workplace to the broader community. I measure my impact by my involvement in advocacy efforts, community outreach programs, and initiatives aimed at advancing LGBTQ+ rights and visibility in society. Collaborating with numerous NGOs and community-based organizations, I have conducted empowering sessions to educate and uplift transgender individuals for their betterment.

Personal Growth and Fulfillment: Ultimately, my definition of success is grounded in my own sense of fulfillment and happiness. I measure my success by my ability to live authentically, pursue my passions, and find meaning and purpose in my life's work. By establishing these benchmarks and criteria, I continuously assess my progress and strive to make meaningful contributions to both my own life and the world around me.
