Introduction:
I play many roles as a working woman: I am founder & chief nurturer of the #100sareepact - a worldwide movement that became a platform for women centric stories through the medium of saree. A communications professional, I am producer, director, editor for films that I make, I write, I help companies build their brand and community through effective messaging, I mentor women to resume their careers after a break, I am a yoga instructor who teaches mindfulness, an ambassador for Pinkathon-India's only women run, and advocate both mental and physical health for all.
Early Stages Of Career:
I began my career as a journalist on
television reporting on all things business and soon moved into the role of
bureau chief, Mumbai. More than two decades ago, television was a nascent
medium and we had to learn most of our skills on the job. They were exciting
but exacting times.
Success Mantra:
Arming oneself with information and doing
enough research on anything we reported on, was the key to building robust and
honest content. I am big on quality of content, fitting the pieces of the
puzzle for all to see, timelines for delivery are sacrosanct, and the camera
never lies. Ever!
Proud Achievements:
I am proud that any time I failed, I dusted
myself, got up and tried again.
Bureau chief at 25 and interviewed many heads of business - Ratan Tata, Aditya Birla, Rahul Bajaj. First television reporter to report on the Bank Scam and Harshad Mehta. Went back to school after my two children were toddlers - IIM B. Started the #100sareepact, connected women from all over the world, did a TEDtalk on it. Have made the saree relevant again. Started my own communications enterprise and help companies communicate their message effectively. Raised money for charity by walking 100 kms at Oxfam.
Struggles/ Challenges:
Too many to mention, and in hind sight, they
made me who I am today - a strong woman, a thorough professional, a mentor, a
thought leader, an erudite communicator. No regrets at lessons learned and
imbibed. I will say this, for a woman, a career path and home balance is one
that is critical, one does not always get everything right but one must
persevere. Ask for help, be realistic about expectations. Be kind to yourself.
Your Advice:
My epitaph will read learner for life. EVERY
leader never shies from learning, absorbing, growing, interacting, engaging.
Also the more you give - knowledge share, experience, learning, motivation,
encouragement, goal setting - the more you evolve. Also, also, the buck stops
here.
Words Of Wisdom To Restart Ones Career:
1. Focus on power networking, personal
branding and hard work. Do not overdo the first.
2. Up skilling and learning something new should be high on the agenda. Find a mentor sponsor who will help in your growth journey.
